True.
I liked Istanbul a great deal. But the FIA decided it was too much fun and dropped it.

They could not afford the fee... The FIA is too convinced that circuit owners should be feel privileged that F1 is willing to drive at their track.

If Turkey was lined with trees and greenery it would be great. But instead it is positioned in a barren land surrounded by swaths of tarmac run off.

As for Tilke's circuits, I've always rated Sepang as the finest. China is pretty good too. Red-Bull/A1-Ring is an awful circuit compared to it's predecessor but is in lovely surroundings.

Actually the scenery of Istanbul Park is just the natural scenery. Could do with less tarmac run off.

Austin isn't a good track.
I am very sorry if you find my posts long and boring, I like to type and often go off on a tangent.
If this is the case, you may click here to solve the problem, or alternatively here too.

I don't understand why Austin is so hyped-up. Seas of tarmac run-offs everywhere, the loooong straight followed by the hairpin and the usual squigglies. The only part I like is T1 and the sweeping downhill left-hander following the esses.

The Austin track has its flaws yes. But it is not the layout. It is the huge tarmac run offs why it looks like a concrete plain.

The track works better for cars than for bikes. And when i look at the four wheeled series, it works better for GT's and in lesser extent LMP2's, than for F1.

I have seen a few races outside F1 at this track and the track provides good racing. Most of the time it is not the track that is the problem but the series that uses it.

Austin is better than some or most of Tilke's immediate predecessors. The issue I take with Austin (outside of the tarmac run-off, per erwin's post) is the unnecessary corners. It appears that one of the mandates of any new Tilke circuit is to stick in corners for the sake of having corners. The section between turns 3 and 8 is completely pointless, same for turn 12 to 15.

Having been to COTA twice it is actually a viewing friendly circuit and you don't feel too far from the action wherever you sit. That's unlike a lot of new or refurbished tracks where you are seated miles from the action (like Silverstone).

Something that struck me the other day is that a mediocre season like 2001 really looks like the ultimate season track-wise.

Sounds like a new topic ;) (no doubt been done to death here, or something similar - pick your top 20-race season tracks).

I certainly wouldn't complain with that calendar though!

I was going to say that they already butchered the Nürburgring by then, but that is not so. It was the last season that it still had that weird bottle-neck first corner.
