On Sunday, had my first fire and separately a decent start-line crash in Formula Fords. We were first to respond and recover.
Only issue with that is you didnt get to 'chase' for very far! Hopefully no injuries. That always takes the edge off of incidents.
With the fire, it was a sedan that smoked from the start, and we normally chase at Morgan Park until the exit of turn 3.
This bloke kept smoking more and more, and then had black smoke, so knew he was burning. Chased him down to turn 4 where he pulled off behind a tyre bank, and he had an airbox fire. So actually got to chase a bit further that time! And had a novel view of the track from a place slightly further than even flag marshalls usually venture.
The FFord crash was a decent sized hit. Some guys tangled towards the front of the field (about 18 car field), and we see a bloke go into the grass on the right of the track and then spear hard left across the field and into the pit wall.
Front of the car and a sidepod (but not the tub itself) were a mangled wreck. Ended up with another guy against him (just wishbone damage - had to wheel him off), and another car with a busted suspension made it as far as turn 2. The driver in the first car was shaken, but alright. Damage was thankfully from hitting the wall and not others spearing into him.
Also had an Excel park right in front of us on the formation lap, just as we were pulling out to chase. And that led to a frantic 90 seconds between being told to get out and push him off the circuit, then sprinting back to the car, and then flooring it to literally catch the start with second-perfect timing (arrived with a rolling start, lol).
I was on radio comms during all of this, and after we managed to get back into position race control said good job. My reply was "HUFFPUFF".
