Flavio Briatore explains why F1’s top teams overlooked Carlos Sainz
https://www.motorsportweek.com/2024/12/ ... los-sainz/
Flavio's reasoning would have much more credibility without him having certain financial interest in a young driver who will be on his team next year.
It is no different for Flavio than it is for other Team Principals who manage drivers such as Toto .... he manages Ocon and is also part of George Russell's Management Team along with Harry Soden.. Wolff was also Bottas manager until recently. He also manages non F1 drivers such as Alexandre Prémat and through a separate management company he own with Mika Hakkinen
Graham Lowdon (ex Marussia TP and now Cadillac TP manages runs a Management company that jointly manages Lewis Hamilton with Mark Hynes and fully manages Zhou, although Hynes is also involved with Zhou..
Flavio has always managed many of his drivers ...Alonso, Webber, Trulli, Piquet Jnr, Kovalainen to name a few.
Famously Jean Todts son Nicholas also managed many drivers including Massa when he was at Ferrari, then run by Jean Todt. Nicholas continued to manage drivers when his father became the head of FIA.
Back in the day Horner was personal manager of many of the Red Bull Junior drivers.
Helmut Marko also has a history of driver management.... Drivers I know he managed include Vitatonio Liuzzi.
I guess what I am saying is that it is nothing unusual for a TP to also have a portfolio of drivers thay do or have personally managed.
Ecclestone himself was manager to many drivers including drivers in the 1950's when he briefly owned Connaught F1. Stuart Lewis-Evans (who drove for Connaught as well as Vanwall, and Jochen Rindt particularly, In fact Bernie stepped away from F1 briefly to build his business, when Lewis Evans was killed. Until he met and became manager for Rindt back before Jochen was in F1.
Its hard the argue against a case of conflict of interest in any of them... but thats life in F1. Its an accepted practice and has been for many years, indeed decades.
(I think perhaps there might be personal prejudices involved in your comment given Flavio, when Sainz became unavailable, after the comparison test, saw more potential in Doohan and supporting the already dented (after Piastri) Alpine Academy / junior programme than he did Schumacher and
