Barry Sheene drove a TWR Mazda RX-7 at the opening round of the 1981 British Saloon Car Championship at Mallory Park. Unfortunately, he was the first retirement.

Of course, in the 2024 Saudi Arabian GP, Ollie Bearman stood in for Carlos Sainz Jr at Ferrari after the Spaniard contracted appendicitis. The British rookie came 7th.

"What is Deletraz doing?"

In this instance, Jean-Denis Deletraz was driving a 1st generation SEAT Toledo in the 1994 French Touring Car Championship. His best result was 5th at Nogaro.

He had also competed at the 1983 Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch, courtesy of Marlboro, having won the FFord Challenge in Spain. I believe he got to the quarter finals. Carlos Snr had always had his eye on rallying, but did some circuit racing because it was easier to find sponsors for circuit racing in Spain over finding sponsors for rallying.

Actually Carlos Sainz Snr also drove a F1 Ferrari F-75 at Fiorano just a few days ago as part of the Ferrari farewell celebrations to thank Junior for his work at Ferrari

There is an Instagram video of that on this link. .Carlos Sainz on track with his dad at Fiorano in the F1-75

Snr also sampled a Renault F1 back in the day. A very young junior was in attendance then.

Just a bit of added trivia in that the F1-75 that, as mentioned above, Sainz Senior and Junior both drove at Fiorano the other day, was the very car that Carlos Junior drove to victory to win his first ever GP in, at the Silverstone British GP of 2022..... so a great memory for Father and Son.in a particularly significant car in the Sainz family motor racing historyi

As an aside it was also the first time the #55 won an F1 Championship GP. Actually I think I can safely say Championship race as opposed to GP. (I checked and no one won at Indianapolis during that race's championship years using the #55  )

I thought the scenario of Senna rallying seemed familiar and I had seen something about it here before many years ago.... found it with a bit of info and complete with a video. Posted long before this thread ever existed. :wow:

Just quoted the post here in case anyone was interested in the video.
Everso Biggyballies wrote: 13 years ago Another side to Ayrton Senna....

This is something I must confess to not having known anything about......

Back in 1986, Ayrton was all ready on the way to greatness, an established F1 driver and indeed a GP winner when this video was made. Ayrton was driving for Team Lotus at the time, when UK magazine Car and Car Conversions persuaded Ayrton into a Welsh forest to spend the day on forest stages in amongst other cars, a Metro 6R4, RS Sierra Cosworth and a 3.4 litre four-wheel-drive Ford Escort.
Senna: “I know nothing about rallying, and I deliberately haven’t listened to anyone about rally driving. I want to find out for myself,” he said. His first run of the day was in the Cosworth, and he understeered wide towards the trees at the very first corner. It was a lesson, predictably, he learned from. “I almost went off there, so it was… surprising. Because I really went into that corner like a normal car,” he explained. “It was stupid, because you have to push it. Before the corner you have to commit. Now I understand why you have to use opposite lock.”

As ever, Senna absorbed that thought, and attacked on his second run.
“I’m learning. It’s more difficult than you expect to do it properly. You have to have a lot of knowledge of the technical things – and a lot of confidence,”

“It makes you give even more credit to rally drivers, who do it the way that they do. Like they go the first time into a forest and they do it.”

He summed up his thoughts at the end of the day.
“Overall today has been much more exciting than I expected. I didn’t feel the time go by. Those people with their cars were curious as to what was going to happen. Everything was so new for me and there was a big question mark. For me a feeling of excitement, but I think 99 percent of those people thought I was going to stick it in the trees…”

When asked if he would be back for more.....

“No, it’s just for today. Just for fun – and that’s it.”
Here is the video footage of that day

Oliver Gavin testing the 1994 Pacific PR01 F1 car. He was the official test driver for the Pacific team and they intended to give him his race debut in the 1995 Australian GP with Katsumi Yamamoto contesting the Japanese races. However, neither Gavin or Yamamoto were granted a superlicence so Bertrand Gachot returned to his seat he'd previously vacated to make way for pay drivers Giovanni Lavaggi and Jean-Denis Deletraz.
