Hulkenberg hit with three-place grid penalty for Abu Dhabi GP
After producing his best Qualifying result of the season in Abu Dhabi, Nico Hulkenberg has been hit with a three-place grid drop for failing to follow the race director’s instructions by overtaking two cars on the pit exit road.
More farcical and nonsense stuff from Race Control..... Hulk got pinged for passing cars in the pitlane exit. The same thing Max famously did legally in Brazil maybe last year, and nothing has changed. It was an allowed procedure. Until this weekend when the rules were changed.

Did I mention that the cars Hulk passed were stopped still.... in the tunnel trying to create space for themselves and possibly to ensure others behind dont even get a chance to start their lap.
By the way the other rule recently introduced to stop these pit lane exit qualifying games is that no car is allowed to stop in the pit lane exit after the are officially out of the limiter area ie the tunnel at Abu Dhabi is an area stopping is not allowed.)
Race control seem to have overlooked the no stopping in the lane exit tunnel rule. The only reason why Hulk was forced into trying to overtake and make his way out onto the track.
In other words race-control made a new rule for this race off no overtaking, but then overlooked the other (stopping) rule that would have ensured Hulk did not even need to try and pass as was legal until Friday.
And the rule that now says no car is allowed to block another at pit exit. As Hulk tried to pass cars they were placing them selves in positions that did block others. Did anyone get pinged for that rule? Not a chance . Completely ovrlooked the rule that caused the issue
In enforcing a new one off no overtaking rule they have overlooked and chosen to overlook and not enforce two existing rules in relation to cars stopping and blocking.
Disgraceful.. Sack the Race Director. Oh wait.....

In their hearing, the stewards found that Hulkenberg did not dispute that he had breached race director Rui Marques' instructions, but that that he had to do so to get a lap in during Q3.
Depsite this, the stewards rejected Hulkenberg's reasoning, writing that the "position of the team garages can never be used as an excuse to breach any regulations."
As a result of the penalty, Max Verstappen moves up to P4, Pierre Gasly is P5 and George Russell is promoted to P6 with Hulkenberg now seventh alongside Fernando Alonso.
They have in the past had extra drivers join the podium getters in the last race of the year..... Fernando did so when he left F1 in 2018 to go and do his WEC and other projects. He was not expected to return to F1 at the time so understandable that he would be invited.“After taking the chequered flag the top three (3) drivers and driver of car 44 (if outside of top three (3)) should stay on track, drop to the back of the field and then proceed directly to the Grid where there will be the opportunity for post-championship celebrations should they wish to do so,” a note the FIA media delegate to teams outlined.
“Following these celebrations, they should proceed towards the start light gantry where they will find the 1, 2, 3 boards.”
