https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/newe ... /10650940/Newey’s move to Aston Martin set to be made official
After strong rumours linking design legend Adrian Newey with Aston Martin, confirmation is now believed to be imminent:
Adrian Newey’s move to the Aston Martin Formula 1 team looks set to be announced in the build-up to next week’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Following months of speculation about the future of the legendary F1 designer, who announced earlier this year that he would be leaving Red Bull, final confirmation of his plans is likely to come before the next race.
While Newey was initially linked most strongly with the Ferrari team in the wake of his Red Bull exit, it quickly became clear that Aston Martin had overtaken it as a leading bidder to secure his services.
As well as team owner Lawrence Stroll doing some personal bidding to convince Newey to come onboard, a secret visit to Aston Martin’s Silverstone factory in June is understood to have played a major part in his decision to believe that the squad can give him what he needs.
Stroll has invested hugely in creating a state-of-the-art facility for the squad, and critically a new wind tunnel is due to be up and running soon, which will help in the team's long-term ambitions.
While Aston Martin has not commented on the situation, an announcement about Newey’s future had long been anticipated for this month – because of a clause in his Red Bull exit terms regarding when his future could be revealed.
As reported by Motorsport.com, sources indicated that a September date had been agreed for when he would be allowed to go public with what he was doing – which then would leave a six-month window before he could officially start work.
The likely imminent confirmation of Newey’s arrival comes amid a major recruitment drive by Aston Martin to secure the top engineering talent the squad thinks is needed to take on the best in F1.
Before the summer break, the outfit announced that former Mercedes engine boss Andy Cowell would be joining it as Group CEO in October, replacing Martin Whitmarsh.
Furthermore, Aston has signed former Ferrari chassis technical director Enrico Cardile to help boost its design strengths.
With the team already having a technical director in place in Dan Fallows, who used to work with Newey at Red Bull, there have been questions asked about how easy it would be to create a coherent structure that involved all its star talent.
But speaking at the recent Dutch Grand Prix, Aston Martin team boss Mike Krack said it would not be a big issue to resolve.
“I think Formula 1 these days is so broad,” he said. “It is not like you have to make huge changes.
“I think there was a time where there was a team that had seven technical directors in the past, so I think we are very far from that. I think someone like that, you have to make any kind of effort to integrate and adjust your structure to get the best out of it.”
While Newey’s likely arrival at Aston Martin will be a huge boost to the team's long-term ambitions, with the Briton having won titles at Williams, McLaren and Red Bull, current driver Fernando Alonso thinks it will take time for his impact to be felt.
Asked at the Italian Grand Prix about the looming confirmation, Alonso said: “Well, still only rumours. And I think it's not only [a] one-man job to fix the things.
“So it's more what we have now and what we are producing; understand what is going in the right direction, what is going on the wrong direction and try to prepare 2025 in a better way.”

Adrian Newey to Aston Martin
I have been reading rumours about this but it does seem more and more likely that Adrian Newey will be going to Aston Martin in 2025. If he does, can we expect to see Alonso challenging for another title?

You know, it does seem to be what is going to happen. Newey has led the last three teams he was leader of to World Championships. Can he lead a fourth one? Alonso has certainly paid penance over the last decade and half for all of his sins of 2007 and 2008, so it would be nice to see him with a "new" winning team. It would be nice to have F1 with five winning teams (there were 7 in 1982). We have got four this season.

But it always takes a couple years. Unfortunately, Alonso will retire by then. So you know what that means...Ruslan wrote: ↑4 weeks ago You know, it does seem to be what is going to happen. Adrian Newey? I don't know, is he not a bit too old by now? Lots of money are on the move, good for Newey and his pension fund, bad for Aston Martin.

Not yet actually confirmed but there seems little doubt of where he is bound. It seems there are contractual reasons that preclude an announcement already.
However a clue has popped up.....
A media conference at Aston Martin is scheduled for next Tuesday. It is believed and is expected to confirm Newey's arrival, or at least his appointment at Aston Martin F1. Im sure his actual arrival there will not happen until Newey's committments to Red Bull and the RB17 Sports Car project are completed some time early in 2025.
It’s believed a clause in Newey’s Red Bull contract prohibits him from signing any new deal until September 6 (Friday).

That's today, so we could potentially hear something solid in the next day or two with any luckEverso Biggyballies wrote: ↑4 weeks ago Not yet actually confirmed but there seems little doubt of where he is bound. It seems there are contractual reasons that preclude an announcement already.

Given the piece I read mentioned that he could not actually even sign a contract until today is a bit odd. Does that mean he can have had all the discussions, agree to the terms, wages, length of contract, his overall responsibility and who reports to him, who doesnt, who he can hire and fire without consultation with Lawrence Stroll, etc etc. Does tht mean he has legally not even been able to sign a heads of agreement type of document that ultimately obliges him to take the job or can he even at this stage just walk away as if nothing has happened.Star wrote: ↑4 weeks agoThat's today, so we could potentially hear something solid in the next day or two with any luckEverso Biggyballies wrote: ↑4 weeks ago Not yet actually confirmed but there seems little doubt of where he is bound. I keep hearing of Eddie Jordans involvement as Adrian's manager and he is being very cagey about what he talks about other than to say nothing contract wise is actually signed.
Clearly it seems like today is a significant date, and given the amount of chat as to who he was talking to about his future, from Ferrari to Williams Mercedes, even Alpine, he must have been free to discuss opportunities with teams if not actually sign anything.
If he signs something contractual today is there a legal cooling off period where any side can back out over the next 73 hours? That would explain no actual announcement until Tuesday?.
We will just have to be patient and hopefully this Tuesday Aston Press Conference with reveal all if we dont get any prior news today. Of course the significance of today Friday September 6th might be a date someone has pulled from the air and published.
To be honest It would be nice to know but I am not losing sleep over whether or not it will all come out over the weekend. It will happen when it happens!

Well it seems like the rumour was right, official confirmation from both sides will happen on Tuesday, but it's a done deal.

Leading Formula 1 designer Adrian Newey will join Aston Martin next year.
An Aston Martin source told BBC Sport that Newey has made a long-term commitment to the team, said to be a five-year contract worth up to a possible £30m a year, including bonuses and add-ons.
The deal will be announced at a news conference organised by Aston Martin at their F1 base at Silverstone on Tuesday.
Newey, who in April negotiated an early exit from his contract as Red Bull chief technical officer, will start work in early March.
The 65-year-old's manager Eddie Jordan refused to discuss the situation when approached for comment by BBC Sport.
An Aston Martin spokesperson said: "Adrian has been linked to many teams and would be an asset to any team, but we don't have anything to announce."
Securing Newey is a coup for Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll after investing heavily in the team with the ambition of turning them into world championship contenders.
Stroll has funded a state-of-the-art new factory, including a wind tunnel, employed a series of top engineers and secured Honda as a works engine partner from 2026.
The team also have two-time world champion Fernando Alonso under contract until the end of 2026.
Newey has built a reputation as the greatest F1 designer in history after winning 12 drivers’ championships and 13 constructors’ titles in a career that spans the Williams, McLaren and Red Bull teams.
In particular, he has a reputation for stealing a march on rivals at the beginning of a period of new regulations.
The deal he negotiated to leave Red Bull, to whom he had been under contract until the end of 2025, frees him to join another team in time to have a significant impact on the design they produce for 2026.
F1 rules forbid teams from starting design work on the aerodynamics of their 2026 before the start of next year.
Newey will be the design lead for a team who have invested heavily in engineering talent in recent years.
Former Mercedes engine chief Andy Cowell joins as chief executive officer on 1 October.
Aston Martin have signed former Ferrari chassis technical director Enrico Cardile, who will start work in his role as chief technical officer at an unspecified point in 2025.
Aston Martin's technical director is Dan Fallows, who joined in April 2022 after working as an aerodynamicist under Newey at Red Bull from 2006 until 2021.

I'm interested in what role exactly. The likes of Fallows would have left to be out of his shadow. Now what for him?

Im not adding anything confirmed here but more a further idea on timing of when he will be able to actually pick up a pencil and start designing for AM with his gardening leave requirements. Also that the Spanish media are suggesting part of the deal to get Newey to join Aston F1 is a shareholding in the team. Again not a confirmation but a suggestion that I know is in relationship to past Newey team departures, as I believe Newey unsuccessfully demanded or wanted shares in the Williams Team and maybe McLaren as well back in the day.
Newey is reportedly close to signing a five-year deal with Aston Martin that will see him remain with the team until at least 2030. While earlier speculation suggested a “long-term commitment”, the BBC and other outlets have confirmed the length of the deal, which also includes a staggering annual salary of up to £30 million (€35.5 million), including performance-related bonuses.
I cant verify this article other than to give the link, and it is not a website I know enough about to pass judgement, but FWIW here is a bit of what they say. Believe it or not. Your choice. We will know one way or the other more about the intricacies and timing of the deal on Tuesday when it will all become official!

In a unique twist, Newey will also receive a stake in the Aston Martin F1 team, according to Spanish media. While the value of these shares remains undisclosed, they will undoubtedly increase Newey’s stake in the team’s future success.
An official announcement is expected soon, with sources suggesting that Newey could be unveiled at Aston Martin’s Silverstone facility in the coming weeks. However, the 65-year-old will not take up his new role until the spring of 2025, as he is still on leave from Red Bull until April of that year.
