The name Laguna Seca is Spanish for "dry lake". The area where the track is was originally a lake. The course was originally built around the lake, which has since dried up entirely. An artificial pond has since been added.

WEATHERTECH RACEWAY LAGUNA SECA
95 LAPS | 212.61 MILES
WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca (previously known as Laguna Seca Raceway) is a paved road racing track used for both auto racing and motorcycle racing, originally constructed in 1957 near both Salinas and Monterey, California, USA. The current racetrack is 2.238 miles (3.602 km) in length with a 300 foot (91 m) elevation change. It has eleven turns, including the famous "Corkscrew" at Turns 8 and 8A. A variety of racing, exhibition and entertainment events are held at the raceway, ranging from superkarts to American Le Mans racing to music festivals.

Six different winners in the season’s first seven races. Are we going to see winner #7..... :idunno:

The 27-car field includes the season debut of David Malukas, out since injuring his left wrist in a mountain bike accident in February, and the first race as an Arrow McLaren driver for rookie Nolan Siegel. Agustin Canapino also returns to Juncos Hollinger Racing after a one-race break.

Race

Among those expected to be in the paddock this weekend are five former Laguna Seca winners. Bobby Rahal, a co-owner of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, won four consecutive years (1984-87) while Andretti Global’s Michael Andretti and Bryan Herta each won two in a row (Andretti in 1991-92, Herta in 1998-99). Herta, who calls races for Kyle Kirkwood (No. 27 AutoNation Honda) is best remembered for losing the 1996 race when Alex Zanardi went hopping through the dirt as the pair dropped through the famous Corkscrew on the final lap.

Helio Castroneves, a co-owner of Meyer Shank Racing, won in 2000. INDYCAR race steward Max Papis won in 2001.

RLL Reaching Participation Milestone

In addition to Bobby Rahal winning four times at this track, his team also has reason to celebrate this weekend.

With cars for Graham Rahal (No. 15 Mobil 1 Honda), Christian Lundgaard (No. 45 Hy-Vee Honda) and Pietro Fittipaldi (No. 30 Eurofarma Honda), RLL will eclipse the 1,000 mark for all-time series starts. The first was Bobby Rahal’s third-place finish in the Surfers Paradise race in 1992.

RLL becomes the sixth active team to have more than 1,000 career starts. The others are AJ Foyt Racing, Andretti Global, Chip Ganassi Racing, Dale Coyne Racing and Team Penske.
PAST WINNERS

The series has raced at WeatherTech Raceway at Laguna Seca since 1983, but the most recent iteration began in 2019.
Which means, only a few of the current drivers have won series races here.

Colton Herta (No. 26 Gainbridge Honda of Andretti Global w/Curb-Agajanian) has won two of the four races, in 2019 and 2021. Palou (2022) and Dixon (2023) are the other drivers who have won on the 11-turn, 2.238-mile permanent road course.

2019 Colton Herta
2020 Covid won
2021 Colton Herta
2022 Alex Palou
2023 Scott Dixon

Palou on pole

Alex Palou l claim pole for the 5th time in his career. His closest challenger, in fact falling only 0.0739s short, was Andretti Global’s Kyle Kirkwood, whose teammate Colton Herta was fourth. This pair was split by Felix Rosenqvist, excelling in the Meyer Shank Racing Honda, and himself only 0.1452 slower than Palou.

The sole Chevrolet representative in the first three rows is Alexander Rossi, who did just enough on his final flyer to edge the impressive Christian Lundgaard of Rahal Letterman Lanigan.

Scott McLaughlin will start seventh, after being knocked out of the Fast Six by a late flyer from Rossi, and because he had a slight slide exiting Turn 6. He will start alongside Romain Grosjean who was an encouraging eighth for Juncos Hollinger Racing, but was disappointed at being backed up by his rivals trying to make space for themselves on track. He was convinced he had a potential pole-winning car.

Pato O’Ward’s took ninth place in the second McLaren, ahead of Scott Dixon, Surprise of the session was David Malukas, making his first start of the season. He escaped Q1 and in Group 2, despite being rusty and his wrist still not fully recovered, he was only 0.5s slower than teammate Felix Rosenqvist.

Team Penske drivers Will Power and Josef Newgarden were eliminated in their respective Q1 groups, each blaming themselves for underperforming. They will line up 15th and 14th respectively, behind Agustin Canapino in the second Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevy. Santino Ferrucci of AJ Foyt Racing was 17th ahead of Andretti’s Marcus Ericsson and RLL’s Graham Rahal,

Nolan Siegel, the rookie starting his first race for Arrow McLaren, did well to get within a second of teammate Rossi, but he will start 23rd.

Good to see Felix back in the top-three. Marcus and Linus needs to sort out whatever freaking issues they're having, even though I think both will run better on the ovals.

Will watch this race tomorrow, midnight start is too much for me.

Just watched the race. They seriously need to stop with waiting to throw the caution until the leaders have pitted.

Other than that, decent enough race.
