[WEC] 2024 TotalEnergies 6 Hours of Spa

Yes, this weekend and its theusual forerunner to the Le Mans 24hr.

Ferrari dominated the last outing at Imola 3 weeks ago, although they managed to screw things up and avoid the win after a double tactical error when it started raining with two of the six hours remaining. ..... Toyota won with two Penske Porsches on the podium, but it was Ferrari who lost the event they had dominated. To no surprise they got hit hardest with BOP adjustments to level the field for this weekend.

Its 499P Le Mans Hypercar has had 12kg added to its minimum weight and its maximum power reduced by 4kW (5bhp) Ferrari’s adjustment compares with 4kg gains for the Toyota GR010 HYBRID and Peugeot 9X8 2024 LMHs and the Porsche 963 LMDh.

Toyota and Porsche have also lost 1kW in maximum power and Peugeot 2kW.

Every car in the Hypercar class will go to the grid heavier at Spa than in Imola with the exception of the Cadillac V-Series.R...... the Caddy remains at the lowest possible weight of 1030kg while losing 1kW in power.

BMW’s M Hybrid V8 and the Alpine A424 LMDhs have gained 3kg, the Isotta Fraschini Tipo 6 LMH Competizione 2kg and the Lamborghini SC63 1kg. Power reductions of 1kW have been handed to BMW and Alpine, while the Lamborghini has lost 2kW.

Isotta’s LMH remains at the class maximum of 520kW (697bhp)

The upward shift in weight and downward shift in power at least partially reflects the differing circuit characteristics of the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps compared with Imola.

It didnt stop Ferrari though.... Ferrari driver Antonio Fuoco blitzed qualifying to claim a second pole position of the season

Fuoco took the top spot by almost exactly half a second at the wheel of the #50 Ferarri 499P Le Mans Hypercar in the 12-minute Hyperpole session for the fastest 10 cars in the first round of qualifying.

The drama didnt stop there with Ferrari screwing up again.

Polesitting Ferrari disqualified after WEC Spa qualifying

Ferrari has lost pole position for the third round of the World Endurance Championship at Spa after its #50 499P Pole winner was discovered to be underweight after qualifying...... It therefore lost all of its times from qualifying and will now start from the rear of the Hypercar field for Saturday's 6 Hour race.

The #5 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 LMDh will now assume pole position after Matt Campbell pipped the sole Chip Ganassi-run Cadillac V-Series.R of Alex Lynn by 0.008s.

The stewards report said:
"After having checked the Technical Delegate report, the stewards considered the minimum car weight did not comply with the relevant regulations.
"Consequently, the Stewards decided to impose the disqualification of car 50 of the qualifying and hyperpole sessions and the deletion of the lap times of these sessions."
A Ferrari statement said the car "was found to be around 1 kg under the minimum weight mandated by regulations" and attributed the discrepancy to a new component fitted to the rear end after damage was incurred in collision with another car during FP3.

Not the only ones though.... The LMGT3 runner-up also disqualified

The #95 United Autosports McLaren 720S EVO has also lost its second place in the LMGT3 category for the same infringement.
Josh Caygill had been 0.337s shy of polesitter Sarah Bovy's Iron Dames Lamborghini Huracan in the delayed Hyperpole session that was red-flagged early on following Alexander Malykhin's crash at Raidillon.

Caygill, Nico Pino and Marino Sato will also have to start from the back of the 18-car grid, with the WRT BMW of Ahmad Al Harthy moving up to join Bovy on the front row.

Nothing really to do with the race this weekend, but forgot to mention.... WEC again leading F1 in the drive to explore alternative fuels, decarbonise motorsport and save the planet!

Alpine reveals Alpenglow Hy4 hydrogen combustion prototype at Spa

Alpine has revealed a hydrogen-powered rolling prototype that will have its first on-track running at Spa's World Endurance Championship round this weekend.

Based on a concept car first presented at the 2022 Paris Motor Show, the 340 bhp Alpenglow Hy4 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre in-line four-cylinder internal combustion engine fuelled by hydrogen.

This is currently stored in gas form in three tanks, but Alpine plans to switch to liquid storage which it believes can be better integrated into the car and improve refuelling speeds.

@MonteCristo Demonstration runs of the Alpenglow Hy4 will also be made at the Le Mans 24 Hours next month, before a second rolling version with a new V6 engine is unveiled prior to the end of the year.

Its release is significant as an indicator of Alpine's interest in the future hydrogen class that is slated for the 2027 Le Mans 24 Hours, while the wider Renault Group is engaged in a series of initiatives for road use to meet its carbon neutrality objectives.

Its quite a tasty piece of kit.....

Shucks.....
Soon… But Not Quite Yet
discovery+ is not yet available in this location.
Time to get a better VPN than the one I get free with my antivirus prog. It works with some programmes but most it connects but I still get a "video not available in your location" regardless of where the VPN is located. :tearful:

I have found a stream for this event on Latifisports though.

Maybe its time for me to think of one of the Aussie streaming services that offer WEC and Indy plus others.
