Well, these long distance races sure help to cover Habul's... ahem... limitations. I recall he was always in the wars in the sprint IMSA races but he somehow manages to just hang around for Gounon & whomever is co-driving to stay on the sharp end. Guess he's more respected than Tracy Krohn? :haha:

On this weekend.

The Gulf 12 Hours is again the final round of the Intercontinental GT Challenge season, and three championships are up for grabs, with overall drivers’ and manufacturers’ titles in the balance, as well as Independent Cup honours.

The Gulf 12 Hours will see 28 GT3 cars from the world’s top manufacturers compete for glory on the spectacular Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi on 10 December. The Groves will be there in their Porsche, driven by an all Aussie lineup of Brenton and Steven Grove with V8 Supercars returnee Richie Stanaway. They are a chance for the Independent Cup

Entry list is a bit light on Pros, with only 5, but a good ProAm showing including some names. Good to see Kenny Habul back in action after breaking his back in practice for the Spa 24hr earlier in the year.

Event Website https://www.gulf12hours.com/

ENTRY LIST
Cars from Audi, BMW, Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes-AMG and Porsche are represented on the official entry list for the Gulf 12 Hours which was published todayce.

We are about 10 minutes into the race now..... link posted above is live now.

A summary of qualy:

Mercedes-AMG Team GruppeM Racing earned pole position for the Lenovo Gulf 12 Hours for the second consecutive year . The #99 Mercedes-AMG GT3 of Maro Engel, Luca Stolz and Mikael Grenier was the fastest car on the night, recording a four-lap average of 1min 51.272secs.

Mercedes-AMG Team 2 Seas Motorsport car #14, driven by Jules Gounon, Maximilian Goetz and Fabian Schiller made it an all-Mercedes-AMG front row, 0.232secs behind.

Pro-Am honours went to Herberth Motorsport and its Porsche 911 GT3 R, driven by Antares Au, Tim Heinemann and Matteo Cairoli, which was an impressive third overall.

Pro-Am honours, for crews with a mix of professional and amateur drivers, went to Herberth Motorsport and its Porsche 911 GT3 R, driven by Antares Au, Tim Heinemann and Matteo Cairoli, which was an impressive third in the overall results

Valentino Rossi alongside his #46 team-mates Dries Vanthoor and Nick Yelloly in the Team WRT-run BMW M4 GT3 will start Sunday’s race from fourth on the grid.

Mercedes-AMG Team GruppeM Racing’s other car, the #77 of Lucas Auer, Lorenzo Ferrari and Frankie Bird, was fifth overall. The #88 Garage 59 McLaren 720 GT3 EVO, in the hands of Alexander West, Marvin Kirchhöfer and Louis Prette was second in Pro-Am, sixth overall.

A bitter-sweet qualifying for Car Collection Motorsport saw the #21 Porsche 911 GT3 R top the times in the Am class, for crews exclusively consisting of amateur drivers, thanks to Dustin Blattner, Constantin Dressler and Joel Sturm.

However, their #12 Porsche 911 GT3 R, which had set the pace in second practice, saw its chances suffer a terminal blow in qualifying two when, with Stefano Constantini at the wheel, crashed at turn three. Car now officially withdrawn.

Mercedes wins Gulf 12 Hours

GruppeM won the Gulf 12 Hours, helping Mercedes-AMG to seal the Intercontinental GT Challenge manufacturers’ title.

Kenny Habul, back in action for the first time since an injury at Spa, just missed out on a Pro-Am podium at the Yas Marina Circuit.

Habul and co-drivers Martin Konrad, Dominik Baumann, and Philip Ellis saw their second-place running #75 SunEnergy1 Racing Mercedes-AMG spin, pit, and stop on track in the last 16 minutes of the race.

The #75 SunEnergy1 team had a strong race and was in contention for a podium after a tremendous two-hour opening stint by Habul.

Disaster struck early for the #4 Grove Racing/EBM Porsche 911 GT3 R. Brenton Grove started the race and had the #4 battling for the lead at the end of his stint. Stephen Grove took over and, after a Full Course Caution, lost control of the car under braking with cold tyres and made heavy contact with two barriers in Turn 1.

He was not seriously harmed but the Grove entry was out of the race.

Maro Engel, Luca Stolz, and Mikael Grenier started from pole in the #99 GruppeM Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo and took the victory to claim the manufacturers’ championship.

The #99 Mercedes-AMG headed to the pits after the opening lap to serve the first of 10 mandatory 100-second timed stops.

The entire Pro field executed the same strategy. This resulted in Pro-Am and Am teams leading the first half of the race.

The #99 trio battled back from going a lap down after a slow pit stop due a wheel issue.

Grenier was able to put the car back on the lead lap near the halfway mark of the race.

The #99 Mercedes caught a break when the race-leading #14 2 Seas Mercedes made a brake change under a Full Course Yellow.

The #46 Team WRT BMW M4 GT3 trio of Valentino Rossi, Nick Yelloly, and Dries Vanthoor inherited the lead with a little more than four hours remaining in the race.

Rossi held the lead over the #99 until a broken pedal box and slow pit stop gave the lead to the #99 Mercedes with less than three-and-a-half hours left.

The #99 held off the #46 BMW, with the help of a five-second penalty handed to Vanthoor, to claim the victory by 12.811s and clinch the manufacturers’ title.

The #14 Mercedes driven by Jules Gounon, Fabian Schiller and Maximilian Goetz crossed the line in third place.

The podium gave Gounon the Intercontinental GT Challenge powered by Pirelli drivers’ champion.

The #21 Car Collection Motorsport Porsche of Constantin Dressler, Dustin Blattner and Joel Sturm were the Am-class winners and a fifth place overall finish.

The #27 Optimum Motorsport McLaren 720S GT3 Evo driven by Rob Bell, Ollie Millroy and Mark Radcliffe took the Pro-Am class victory and finished sixth overall.

And that event is almost upon us.....

@erwin greven if you feel this should be the start of a 2024 Intercontinental GT Series thread feel free to do so.

The 2024 Repco Bathurst 12 Hour returns to the world famous and much loved Mount Panorama on the 16th-18th of February to launch Australia's motorsport calendar, and indeed the 2024 Intercontinental GT Challenge Series.

Last year was a bit of a Covid Recovry year as far as the 12 hour was concerned. Just 4 international entries due to the circumstances of the previous Covid turmoil, and of course the event not falling in its usual February timeslot also had its effect with everything from entry level to weather.

Better was promised for this year with a return to its traditional time, and although the entry list was slow to reflect this as we have got closer to the event the number of International Entrants has risen and today we have had an official entry list released. Not as good as the halcyon years of the event pre Covid, but a good improvement over last year.

So we have a 31 car entry list, 11 Internationals.

The field is comprised of nine different marques, including five for a total of 21 cars in Class A for GT3 vehicles and two for a total of three in Class C for GT4 machinery.

Mercedes-AMGs are the most numerous, with a total of 10 on the entry list including nine in GT3.

Notably, though, Audi is the next most prolific marque with five GT3s, despite the decision last year in Ingolstadt to wind back its customer racing programme.

The total breakdown among Class A is 12 cars in Pro, six in Bausele Pro-Am, and three in Silver.

The Mercedes-AMG GT3 contingent includes five in the Pro subclass, headlined by the SunEnergy1 team which has won the Bathurst 12 Hour for the past two years.

Triple Eight Race Engineering is fielding one Pro entry – the ‘National Storage Racing' car to be driven by Broc Feeney/Will Brown/Mikael Grenier – and one in Pro-Am – the ‘Triple Eight JMR' effort to be piloted by Jamie Whincup, Jordan Love, and Prince Jefri Ibrahim.

Craft-Bamboo Racing and 2023 pole-sitters GruppeM Racing are representing the Three-Pointed Star, with Scott Taylor Motorsport's Mercedes-AMG filled with a trio of Supercars drivers in Craig Lowndes/Cam Waters/Thomas Randle.

In addition to Triple Eight JMR, Mercedes-AMGs have been entered in Pro-Am by the Erebus-supported M-Motorsport and Heart of Racing, with Tigani Motorsport running the Supabarn car in Silver.

Two of the Audis feature in the Pro subclass, both entered by Melbourne Performance Centre, which is also expected to run the Hallmarc R8 LMS which has been entered in Pro-Am.

Schumacher Motorsport is also in Pro-Am in an R8 LMS, while Valmont Racing/Tigani is campaigning one in Silver.

Three of the four Porsches have been entered in the Pro class in what will be the first time that the 992 GT3 R has raced at Mount Panorama.

Manthey EMA, HubAuto Racing, and Phantom Global Racing are responsible for those efforts, with the former also fielding a 991 GT3 R in Pro-Am.

Completing the Pro entries is BMW Team WRT with two M4s, one of which will be driven by Valentino Rossi.

The other brand in the GT3 classes is Lamborghini, with Wall Racing receiving engineering support from the factory to field a Huracan in Silver.

Class C for GT4 cars will be contested by Method Motorsport with its two McLaren Arturas, one of which will be driven by co-owner Chaz Mostert, and Mark Griffith's Team Nineteen in a Mercedes-AMG.

There are seven Invitational entries, a contingent made up of five MARC Cars – including Matt Stone Racing and that to be driven by former IndyCar star Paul Tracy – a KTM X-Bow GT2, and a Vortex.

Final driver line-ups will be announced closer to the date.

Porsche team Manthey have been quick to confirm their driver line ups for their two car team in the Bathurst 12 hour.

One of those in their "Pro" entry is that of former winner of the 12 hour for Porsche (2019) and more recently winner of the recent Daytona 24 hour for Porsche, Matt Campbell. He also was also runner up in last years 12 hour, missing out by just one second to the Sun Energy Kenny Habul Mercedes.

Matt Campbell returning to Bathurst 12 Hour with Manthey EMA

Matt will share its Pro class entry, a latest-generation Porsche 911 GT3 R 992 carrying the #912 plate, with Ayhancan Güven and Laurens Vanthoor.

In Pro-Am, the #911 911 GT3 R 991 will be driven by Yasser Shahin, Harry King, and Alessio Picariello.

Image

Craig Lowndes and Tickford stars Cameron Waters and Thomas Randle team up in an all-star Scott Taylor motorsport AMG Merc

Another entry that will be interesting to follow will be that of crowd favourite and Bathurst Legend Craig Lowndes, teaming up with Tickford Supercars pair Cam Waters and Thomas Randle in the Scott Taylor motorsport entry.

Having previously run in Pro-Am, the well-known STM Mercedes AMG GT3 will take on the fight for outright honours in 2024 with the Supercars stars at the wheel and Ashley Seward Motorsport working behind the scenes.

The team has raised awareness and funds for Prostate Cancer each year and has a best finish of 10th outright and first in class in 2022 in a Porsche GT3 Cup Car. Last year looked promising until a big crash in the Esses in a campaign where Lowndes was joined by Taylor, Alex Davison and Geoff Emery.

Lowndes will be lining up for his 11th Bathurst 12 Hour start and third at Scott Taylor Motorsport with the highlight his two wins in a Ferrari in 2014 and 2017.

Into the last few days of the leadup to Sunday's 12 hour.

Sadly the Middle East situation and the issues that is causing with sea freight disruptions and delays has had its effect on a couple of the internationals.

Porsche team withdraws from Bathurst 12 Hour

Thankfully not Manthey, but Taiwanese Porsche team HubAuto Racing has announced its withdrawal from the Repco Bathurst 12 Hour due to shipping delays.

Sadly it takes out a quality entry..... Porsche factory trio Kevin Estre, Patrick Pilet and Klaus Bachler were lined up to drive the car.

.Image

But on Sunday, with only a few days ahead of the start of practice for the Australian event, HubAuto released a short statement stating that problems with freighting its Porsche 911 GT3 R to Australia in time have forced it to pull out.
“I cannot begin to describe the upset and disappointment that our team, our drivers, and Porsche currently feel,” HubAuto boss Morris Chen commented.
“In the past month, we have suffered numerous and considerable delays in the shipping of our car and equipment from Asia. We have worked tirelessly with Supercars, SRO, the freight companies, the New South Wales Government, as well as other local and international GT teams to be present and ready to challenge for the Bathurst 12 Hour.

“Unfortunately, circumstances beyond our control have led us to withdraw from the event. We apologise for the disappointment this may cause our supporters. We were looking forward to returning to Bathurst and now hope to participate in 2025.

“We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all involved parties for their invaluable support and assistance.”

Their withdrawal means the entry for the Bathurst 12H now stands at 30 cars overall, and 19 GT3 cars.

A minor bonus has been the late addition of a fourth car in the GT4 category, a Ginetta G55 GT4 entered by Nineteen Corporation for Paul Buccini, Owen Hizzey, Colin White and Aaron Zerefos.

So what have we got to look forward to?

Ninety seven drivers from 18 different nationalities will descend on Mount Panorama,

The field also includes two pairs of brothers for the first time...... South African stars Kelvin and Sheldon van der Linde will go head-to-head, while Belgian brothers Laurens and Dries Vanthoor will also compete head to head.

The field includes the reigning Bathurst 12 Hour winners, Kenny Habul, Jules Gounon and Luca Stolz who will aim for an historic Bathurst three-peat this weekend aboard their SunEnergy1 Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo.

Gounon, meanwhile, will aim for his fourth consecutive Bathurst victory as he searches for a feat never achieved in endurance racing at Mount Panorama.. Gounon claimed victory in 2020, 2022 and 2023, with the 2021 race not held due to the pandemic.

Only Bathurst legends Peter Brock, Jim Richards, Larry Perkins, Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup have claimed three Bathurst enduros in a row, while Gounon is the only one to achieve it in the 12 Hour.

Gounon is also the reigning Intercontinental GT Challenge drivers’ champion having claimed the title last year.

Eight former Bathurst 12 Hour victors will be represented on the grid this year for a total of 13 victories in Australia’s international enduro.

Four IGTC title winners will be on the grid, while both the current Fanatec GT World Challenge Australia outright (Liam Talbot), Am (Brad Schumacher) and European (Raffaele Marciello) champions are also entered, showcasing the best of GT3 racing around the world.

Eight former winners of the Bathurst 1000 – totaling 18 Great Race victories – also set to compete including three, Craig Lowndes, Jamie Whincup and Jonathan Webb, who have won both Bathurst classics.

14 Supercars drivers accounting for 305 Repco Supercars Championship victories, as well as two former series champions.

Eight different drivers entered this year have claimed a total of 13 victories in the Nürburgring 24, while eight drivers have claimed 11 24 Hours of Spa victories.

Seven-time MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi will also be a major drawcard for fans as he returns for a second attempt

When does it all start?

Not racing as such but the fun starts on Thursday.....with the traditional track to town parade and autograph session in the center of Bathurst.

Image

On-track action commences Friday with four practice sessions before building to the Pirelli Shootout and the Allan Simonsen Pole Award on Saturday.

The 21st Bathurst 12 Hour then commences at 5:45 a.m. local time on Sunday morning. (Bathurst is +10 on Europe and +11 on the UK atm.)

Who will win the 2024 Bathurst 12 Hour?

The local press outlines who has the best chance of winning, a quirk / loophole in the Pro regs that has given us a winner in the past, and gives some pointers as to who to watch out for.....

Once again, the entry is list is comprised of mixture of gun internationals and world-class Antipodeans – both in terms of teams and drivers, and sometimes within teams.

For outright contenders, we must obviously confine ourselves to Class A for GT3 vehicles and, within that, the answer is most likely to come from the 11-strong Pro subclass.

However, a Pro entry is not necessarily filled with ‘pro' drivers, a move which proved a winning strategy in 2023.

Then and now, SunEnergy1 has entered the top (sub)class for Bronze-ranked driver Kenny Habul to share his Mercedes-AMG with Platinum steerers in Jules Gounon and Luca Stolz.

With no minimum Bronze seat time for Pro entries, Gounon and Stolz collectively performed the bulk of the driving 12 months ago, and the strategy has now been emulated by Melbourne Performance Centre.

The Audis which it has entered in the Pro class are also Bronze/Platinum/Platinum trios, namely Brad Schumacher/Markus Winkelhock/Ricardo Feller and Liam Talbot/Kelvin van der Linde/Christopher Haase.

It is a bold strategy but, with a relatively strong Bronze, some careful management, and/or a little bit of luck, it can pay off – as SunEnergy1 has proven.

Habul's car is one of five Mercedes-AMGs in Pro, the others being entered by Triple Eight Race Engineering, GruppeM Racing, Craft-Bamboo Racing, and Scott Taylor Motorsport.

Triple Eight may only boast one factory driver in Mikael Grenier but Broc Feeney is now a regular in its GT World Challenge programmes and put Car #888 on the front row at Mount Panorama in 2023, while Will Brown has GT3 experience and recent testing miles under his belt.

GruppeM has lost Raffaele Marciello to the BMW ranks but retains another Three-Pointed superStar in Maro Engel, last year's pole-sitter, alongside Felipe Fraga and Bathurst 1000 winner David Reynolds, who has been a semi-regular in GT World Challenge in recent years.

Let us not forget also that, if not for a faulty data logger, the German-flagged team would probably have won last year, instead of suffering yet another near-miss at Mount Panorama.

Craft-Bamboo is another local/international combination with Jayden Ojeda partnering Maximilian Gotz and Daniel Juncadella.

Perhaps the most intriguing Mercedes-AMG entry in Pro is STM's all-Supercars line-up of Craig Lowndes/Cam Waters/Thomas Randle – a trio comprised of a two-time outright winner, a two-time starter, and a complete 12 Hour rookie, but one who hit a purple patch in the latter half of the 2023 Supercars season.

Team WRT will tackle Mount Panorama for a second time as BMW's representative, with Marciello joining Maxime Martin and MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi in Car #46, while the sister entry which finished fourth outright in 2023 will again be Sheldon van der Linde, 2018 race winner Dries Vanthoor, and Charles Weerts.

There are also two Porsches in Pro, to be fielded by Manthey EMA and Phantom Global Racing.

Manthey EMA finished second in 2023 and is spearheaded by Queenslander Matt Campbell, who won the 2019 Bathurst 12 Hour, and last month's 24 Hours of Daytona.

Campbell shares Car #912 with Laurens Vanthoor and Ayhancan Güven in the first Mount Panorama enduro for the latest-generation 911 GT3 R (992).

Phantom Global is a newly-formed team, but features Platinum-ranked Joel Eriksson along with Gold drivers Jaxon Evans and Bastian Buus.

That is arguably not the extent of the outright contenders, with five cars in Pro-Am, although they will have to overcome the minimum Bronze driver time, while three cars will contest the Silver subclass.

As always, Balance of Performance will also be a major factor, and is a moving target until the race gets underway.
