Dick May crashed very hard in the 1974 Southern 500 after relieving Elmo Langley and "took a chunk" out of the outside guide rail, then slammed into the inside concrete pit wall and cracked it. I can't find anything on this other than the radio call of the wreck.
Apparently he was taken off in a stretcher and to the hospital.
