Al Essig's serious accident, 1972, 9th Lake Garnett Castrol Grand Prix

In the same event Ralph Miller lost his life in, another serious accident occurred. Overland Park's Al Essig received severe injuries when he crashed into a stone wall/water-filled barrels. According to his son Chris: "Dad broke both legs, a hip, 3 ribs, a shoulder and had some facial damage as well. Luckily they broke all the bones in both his feet getting him out of the car."
