Memories of Williams

#1

Post by PTRACER »

The Williams family have now bowed out of the sport after nearly 50 years. It's a sad moment, but hopefully the Williams name will live on under the new owners and rise once again.

What thoughts/memories do you have when you hear the name "Williams"?

For me, it was hands down Damon Hill winning the championship in 1996. The Montoya era also has a special place in my heart.

Regga winning their first ever GP at Silverstone in 1979. There that day.

It's interesting how we all associate with different eras, I suppose age is the biggest factor.

And of course you have seen this. A Williams was destined to win that race, it is a shame it couldn't have been Alan Jones.

Do you have any photos from that day in your personal collection?

Damon Hill winning his eighth Grand Prix of the season in the wee hours of that October Sunday in 1996 - World Champion at last!

Keke Rosberg, hurling various types of Williams around various types of circuits - always entertaining!

That FW07 - a beaut!!

Hehehe another Williams inspired memory of the FW07..... Amongst my motor racing male friends back in the day, we used to evaluate the looks of girls we might have seen, dated, known etc. Depending on the attributes they would each be assigned a code for our undercover comments based on race car chassis..

A slightly overweight or large breasted girl might be referred to as an M10B (with the bag tanks in the sidepods) through F5000's and others to a the perfect girl, gorgeous, and with everything to scale and in the right place would be classified as an FW07.

One of my worst memories:

Villeneuve winning in 1997, which greatly upset 8 year old me as I really wanted to see the red Ferrari win, and nobody in my family liked JV.

One of my best memories:

Damon Hill winning in 1996, which I loved as I was a massive Damon Hill fan, and again, nobody in my family liked JV.

Bitterest memory: Germany 1981. Sigh.

Frustrating memory: Them not being able to do pit stops quickly during the mid-90s. And them having terrible pit strategies compared to Ferrari in the 90s and early 2000s.

it was especially bad in 1995. If Benetton managed the stop in say 8.0 seconds, then you could almost guarantee a 12.5 second stop or worse for Williams.

I started watching F1 in 1999. My first memories therefore were mainly from Zanardi's terrible F1 comeback. I still remember Alex in the leading positions after the start to the Italian Grand Prix.

Seeing Alan Jones and Carlos Reutemann absolutely trounce everyone at the 1980 USGP at Watkins Glen.
While it was exciting to see the Alfa Romeo on pole, I was hugely disappointed to see my childhood hero Mario Andretti get beat, both Alfas drop out (they sounded amazing!), and the Ferraris mired in the midfield.
